What happened to the Canadian Labour Shortage?

Not so long ago, whenever we opened a newspaper or business publication, we would read about how the skill and labour shortage in Canada, particularly
in the West, was the biggest threat to our economy. Fast forward a few months and all the talk is about the global financial crisis, hiring freezes or lay-offs, government bail-outs and recession. So what happened to our urgent need for more workers?

Listening to what some experts say the short answer is: It’s still there for some industries and it will most likely come back for most others.

No doubt, times will be tough for many businesses. However it seems that the economic crisis does not affect employment across the board – it’s hitting
certain countries harder than others, Canadian provinces in the East more so than in the West with some industries and professions particularly affected.

Many experts agree that the current economic slump is only postponing the issue of a labour shortage stressing that the lack of skilled labour is a long-term problem that will return and persist after the economy recovers.
